For a feature wall, Venetian plaster gives depth, movement and a soft polished sheen that paint cannot copy, and it lasts for decades. Paint is quicker and cheaper and easy to change when you redecorate. The right choice depends on the room, your budget and how long you want the look to last.
What Venetian plaster is
Venetian plaster is made from slaked lime and marble dust. It is applied by hand in several very thin coats with a steel trowel, then compressed and burnished. The layers catch the light differently, which gives the surface its depth. Marble, stone and metallic effects, including gold veining, are built up by hand, so every wall is unique.
Where it works best
- Living room media walls and chimney breasts
- Alcoves and floating shelves
- Hallways and stairwells
- Bathrooms and kitchens, sealed with a protective wax
- Receptions, restaurants and salons
Durability and care
Because it is lime based, Venetian plaster is breathable and naturally resists mould. Once cured it is hard wearing. Small marks can often be polished out, and local repairs blend in far better than a patch of paint touch up.
