White silicone render with ashlar banding on a new extension

Rendering by Loader Luxe Plastering

Render protects masonry from the weather and transforms the look of a property. On new extensions it gives a clean modern finish, and on older homes it can cover tired or mismatched brickwork.

Silicone and monocouche renders are through coloured, so they need no painting, and silicone repels water and stays cleaner for longer. Traditional sand and cement render is ideal where it will be painted, and lime render is the right choice for solid walled period properties that need to breathe.

Good render comes down to preparation. We clean and treat the substrate, fit stop and angle beads, mesh where needed and work to straight, true lines around windows and doors. We can also add decorative banding and ashlar lines.

Questions

Rendering questions

Straight answers from a master plasterer. Anything else, call 07515 569399.

Which render is best for my house?

It depends on the wall and the look you want. Silicone suits most modern homes and extensions, lime suits solid walled period properties, and sand and cement suits walls that will be painted. We recommend the right system with your quote.

Can render go over existing brickwork?

Usually, yes. The wall is cleaned, treated and beaded first. Painted or crumbling surfaces need extra preparation, which we check before quoting.

Can you render in winter?

Render needs dry weather and temperatures above about 5 degrees while it cures, so we plan exterior work around the forecast.

Do I need planning permission to render my house?

Often not, but it can be needed in conservation areas, on listed buildings or where the change in appearance is significant. Check with your local council before work starts.
