Skimming

Skimming is a thin finishing coat of plaster, around 2 to 3 millimetres thick, applied over existing plaster or new plasterboard. Loader Luxe Plastering skims walls and ceilings across London and Kent to cover cracks, wallpaper damage and uneven patches, leaving a smooth surface ready for paint.

Skimming by Loader Luxe Plastering

We protect floors and fittings, tape and fill cracks, apply a bonding agent where it is needed and then lay on two thin coats of finishing plaster. Each wall is trowelled several times as it sets, so the surface comes up flat and polished with straight, crisp corners.

A skim is the most cost effective way to transform a tired room. It is also the finish we apply over new plasterboard on extensions, partitions and loft conversions.

Fresh plaster needs to dry before you decorate. A mist coat of watered down emulsion goes on first, followed by your normal coats of paint, and we leave you clear advice on drying times before we go.

Questions

Skimming questions

Straight answers from a master plasterer. Anything else, call 07515 569399.

How long does a skim take to dry?

Usually several days to a week in good conditions, and longer in winter or in rooms without heat or airflow. It is dry when the colour is an even light pink with no darker patches.

How long does it take to skim a room?

Many single rooms can be skimmed in a day. A whole house, or a room that needs repairs first, takes longer, and we give you a timescale with the quote.

Can you skim over artex?

In most cases, yes. We seal the surface and skim it, or overboard first if the texture is heavy. Older textured coatings can contain asbestos, so we never sand or scrape them.

Do I need a mist coat on new plaster?

Yes. New plaster is very absorbent, so a mist coat of watered down emulsion seals it and stops the next coats of paint from peeling.
