If your existing plaster is firmly attached and sound, a skim is usually all you need. If it is hollow, crumbling, badly cracked or coming away from the wall, it needs taking back and replastering. A skim over failing plaster will not last.
Quick checks you can do
- Tap test. Tap the wall with your knuckles. A dull, hollow sound means the plaster has lost its bond.
- Look for bulges. Bulging or bowing areas are often blown plaster.
- Check for crumbling. Plaster that turns to powder when you press it, often near skirting boards or old damp patches, needs replacing.
- Hairline cracks. Fine cracks on otherwise sound plaster are usually fine to tape and skim.
When overboarding makes sense
Sometimes fixing new plasterboard over a poor wall or ceiling is quicker and cleaner than hacking off. It is a good option for old ceilings, especially textured ones that may contain asbestos and should not be scraped.
Period homes
Solid walled period properties often have lime plaster, which needs to breathe. Covering it with modern gypsum can trap moisture. We repair lime with lime where it matters.
